Artist Bio
David Graff has had a circuitous, but creative route to his current status as an accomplished visual artist.
His Gilded Series began in 2000. Special pieces were commissioned for prominent display at Holt-Renfrew, Joey Tomatoes Restaurant in Edmonton, along with purchases by Intrawest Hotels in Nevada, Apres Restaurant in Whistler, and recent use in the latest Will Smith movie, I Robot. David also counts private collectors in L.A., Reno, Seattle, St. Louis, London, Vancouver and Hong Kong among his patrons.
Prior to all of this, David's creative energy was channeled into a lengthy career as a singer/songwriter, when in 1994 the urge to expand into the visual arts led him to start his own faux finishing company. Through this, David has enjoyed considerable success with his highly sought after work on high-end residential and commercial projects in Los Angeles, Vancouver, Hong Kong, and China. His work on the lobby of the Wiltshire Grand in L.A. won an Interior Design Institute Award in 2001, his contribution to a residential project in 1999 won the Gold Georgie Award for Best Overall Interior, and his extensive work in a Shaughnessey, B.C. residence will be showcased in an upcoming issue of Architectural Digest.
Gilding is the centuries old practice of applying hammered metal leaf to any number of surfaces to achieve a richly opulent finish. It’s history can be traced from the gold statuary of ancient Egypt to the glittering domes of Imperial Russia.
David’s works rely upon the distinctive use of, and effects produced by gilding gold, silver, copper, bronze and aluminum leaf are combined with chemical patina, paint, dyes and stains to achieve a wide range of colors and textures. David achieves a richly opulent finish on pieces that are equally at home in traditional and contemporary interiors.
The art that ensues is a unique juxtaposition of modern sensibility and old-world craft.
